Hot take: AI is going to be better at helping people with their problems than humans will be.
Not because AI is more human…
But because it’s not human at all.
Think about the moments people really need help.
It’s rarely in the middle of a polished coaching session or a weekly recurring therapy hour in the corner of a strip mall.
It’s when they’re spiraling at 3 AM.
It’s during that 5-minute breakdown between meetings.
It’s on a random Sunday when there’s no one to talk to.
Humans aren’t built to be available 24/7. They aren’t built to listen to every problem without inserting their own opinions or biases. They aren’t built to handle the emotional labor of dozens of other people’s problems.
But AI is.
Most people think emotional support requires another person. But when you break it down, what most people really need is:
- A place to speak freely.
- An ear that listens without judgment.
- A consistent voice that helps them reflect, reconsider and then take responsibility for their own shit.
None of that is inherently human—it’s linguistic. It’s relational. And frankly, it’s exactly what language models, when tuned correctly, have the potential to be great at.
We’re not headed toward AI replacing coaches or therapists entirely.
We’re headed toward something deeper:
A world where emotional support is always on.
And for millions of people, that might be the first time they’ve ever felt that.
See you Monday,
Mark
P.S. Maybe I’m crazy, but I believe in this AI thesis so strongly that I put my money where my mouth is last year and co-founded an AI start-up that aimed to build the world’s first personal AI coach.
It’s called Purpose and it’s probably the most powerful thing I’ve ever created. You can receive a free (mind-blowing) personality assessment and seven-day trial by using the button below. Check it out.
