You Have Two Brains

Fun Fact: Your brain is basically two versions of you constantly fighting for control:

    1. The Thinking Brain
    2. The Feeling Brain

Your Feeling Brain is like an obnoxious child that wants what it wants. Your Thinking Brain is like the rational adult who knows what’s best.

And no matter how grown you think you are, your Feeling Brain still kicks logic in the shins sometimes and decides, “Sure, Tuesday at 11PM is a great time for piña coladas.”

The problem is that research consistently shows that when it comes to taming our Feeling Brain, willpower doesn’t cut it. Case in point: when’s the last time you met a four-year-old who responded well to being told to “just try harder”?

When you find the child part of your brain taking over, don’t fight it. Instead, bribe it.

“You can listen to that new Bad Bunny album…
    But only while you write.”

    “You get to watch YouTube…
But only after you finish your job application.”

    “You can have that cookie…
But eat a piece of spinach first for the love of God.”

Most people fail not because they’re weak.

They fail because they waste their strength pretending they should always be strong.

    See you Monday,
    Mark
